Chennai, July 19 (IANS) A sharp political exchange has erupted between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the AIADMK after Leader of Opposition (LoP) Edappadi K. Palaniswami accused the state government of failing to protect innocent lives and attempting to silence victims’ families through compensation.
In a strongly worded statement, Palaniswami alleged that the TVK government, within just 60 days of assuming office, had begun placing a price on innocent lives.
Referring to recent controversies surrounding the deaths in Nagercoil and the Puzhal prison, he claimed that the government was trying to suppress public outrage by offering compensation rather than ensuring justice and accountability.
The AIADMK leader further said that the people of Tamil Nadu were suffering under the new administration, comparing their plight to “escaping the grip of an elephant only to fall into the jaws of a crocodile”.
He urged the government to govern responsibly and fulfil the hopes of voters who had sought political change instead of disappointing them.
TVK responded with an equally aggressive counterattack through its IT Wing, dismissing Palaniswami’s criticism as “like Satan preaching the truth”.
The party accused the AIADMK leadership of lacking the moral authority to speak about clean governance, alleging that those who had done anything for the sake of political power were now pretending to champion ethical politics.
The ruling party also revived memories of the Sathankulam custodial deaths that took place during the AIADMK regime, asking whether the people of Tamil Nadu had forgotten the incident. TVK argued that the AIADMK was in no position to lecture the present government on issues relating to justice, law and order, or the protection of human rights.
The party further took exception to remarks allegedly belittling the influence of cinema in politics. It said that any attempt by the AIADMK to mock the role of cinema amounted to disrespecting two of the party’s own tallest leaders — former Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and J. Jayalalithaa, both of whom rose to political prominence after illustrious careers in the film industry.
Concluding its response, the TVK asserted that the people were closely watching what it described as politically motivated attacks on a Chief Minister committed to corruption-free and bribery-free governance.
The exchange marks the latest escalation in the increasingly bitter political confrontation between the ruling TVK and the principal opposition AIADMK.
