Chennai, Oct 8 (IANS) Tamil Nadu BJP president, Nainar Nagenthran, has criticised Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government over two alleged sexual assaults on young girls, accusing the administration of failing to protect children and demanding swift prosecution and medical care for the latest victim.
In a post on X, Nagenthran referred to the alleged sexual assault of a five-year-old girl belonging to a migrant worker’s family in Chennai’s Tiruvottiyur. He said the incident had caused widespread shock and grief across Tamil Nadu.
Nagenthran said the latest allegation emerged while people were still coming to terms with an earlier incident in Gummidipoondi, where a three-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and thrown into thorny bushes.
Describing the Tiruvottiyur incident as heartbreaking, he expressed concern over the safety of children from economically vulnerable families who come to Tamil Nadu in search of employment and depend on the state for their livelihood.
The BJP president alleged that repeated incidents of violence against women and children reflected a deterioration in law and order.
He accused the Vijay administration of relying on empty promises while failing to address public safety concerns.
He also criticised the Chief Minister, who, according to the post, controls the police and home portfolios, alleging that administrative inaction had created situations in which members of the public had to take to the streets to demand the apprehension of offenders.
Nagenthran attributed what he described as criminals’ lack of fear of the law to alleged administrative corruption and the government’s inexperience.
He alleged that these shortcomings had contributed to widespread criminal activity across the state. Demanding stringent action in the Tiruvottiyur case, he called for the accused to be prosecuted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act through a fast-track court and given the maximum punishment permitted by law.
He urged the government to take responsibility for ensuring that the affected child received high-quality medical treatment. Nagenthran further called on Vijay to abandon what he termed “image politics” and give immediate priority to the safety of women and children.
Warning of political consequences, he said the people of Tamil Nadu would teach the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government a lesson if it failed to maintain law and order.
His statement combined demands for punishment and treatment with criticism of the government’s handling of public safety in Tamil Nadu.
