Ahmedabad, Sep 15 (IANS) The Ahmedabad City Police have invoked the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime Act (GUJCTOC) against three alleged members of the “Babu Kaliya gang” after an investigation into a recent arms case found links to a wider network accused of involvement in offences including attempted murder, illegal arms dealings, narcotics and intimidation.
The action follows the registration of a case at Vejalpur police station under Sections 109(1) and 54 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Sections 25(1-B) and 27(1) of the Arms Act.
During the investigation, police said they found that the accused had allegedly formed an organised gang and were involved in criminal activities in different parts of Ahmedabad.
According to the Zone-7 police, examination of the criminal records of the accused showed that about 14 serious offences had been registered against members of the group at Vejalpur, Vatva, Danilimda and the Crime Branch (DCB).
These cases relate to alleged illegal possession and sale of firearms, attempts to murder, deadly attacks, narcotics and threats.
Police said the accused had continued their activities for about a decade despite preventive action under PASA and the CrPC and conditional bail orders by the court.
Following a proposal submitted by the Vejalpur police inspector and approved by the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut, Sections 3(1)(2), 3(2) and 3(4) of the GUJCTOC Act, 2015, were added to the case.
The further investigation is being conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, N-Division, S M Patel.
Mujahid Ali alias Babu Kaliya Sakirali Aashiqali Nai, 33, is in judicial custody, while police have obtained two days’ remand from the court for further investigation.
Wasim alias Demo Usman Abdulgafar Shaikh, 26, is also in judicial custody, while 23-year-old Rozankhan alias Shezan Wahidkhan Pathan has been declared wanted.
During further questioning, police said Mujahid Ali disclosed his alleged involvement in two earlier murder cases.
He was acquitted in a murder case registered at Vejalpur in 2018, while he was named as an accused in a 2023 murder case at Bavla police station in Mehsana district in connection with allegedly supplying an arms weapon.
Police said his questioning is continuing to determine whether he was involved in any other offences.
The records cited by police show a long list of cases against Mujahid Ali. They include a 2017 DCB case under the Arms Act; several Vejalpur and DCB cases registered between 2022 and 2025 involving the IPC, BNS and Arms Act; a 2025 Danilimda case under Sections 8(C), 20(B) and 29 of the NDPS Act; a 2025 Vatva case involving alleged attempt to murder and offences under the Arms Act; and the 2018 Vejalpur murder case under Sections 302 and 120B of the IPC and the Arms Act.
The 2023 Bavla case relates to Section 302 of the IPC and provisions of the Arms Act and the Gujarat Police Act. Wasim is named in three cases listed by the police, including two Vejalpur cases from 2025 and the 2026 case that led to the latest investigation.
Rozankhan is also named in three Vejalpur cases, including two registered in 2025 and 2026 and the latest 2026 case.
Further investigation is ongoing.
