New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS) New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal will on Sunday plant saplings under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative at Raja Bazar, marking the 40th weekend of the plantation drive, officials said on Saturday.
Chahal will lead residents of Central Government Employees Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) Multi-Storey flats at Raja Bazar’s Sector 4 DIZ Area, in planting saplings of native species.
The campaign aims to connect emotional values with environmental protection and inspires society to fulfil its responsibility towards nature, an official statement said.
According to Chahal, inspired by PM Modi, the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign encourages every citizen to plant a tree in honour of their mother and establishes a strong emotional connection between environmental protection and public participation.
“”Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” is not just a tree-planting campaign, but a mass movement of emotional and social responsibility. By planting a tree, we not only pay tribute to our mother and Mother Nature but also lay a strong foundation for a secure future for next generations,” the NDMC Vice Chairperson said in the statement.
He has been highlighting that merely planting trees is not enough; their regular protection, irrigation, and care are equally important.
Chahal added that the NDMC has prepared a year-long Green Calendar, under which tree-planting drives will be organised every Sunday in various areas of New Delhi.
“The Departments of Horticulture, Health, Civil Engineering, Sanitation, Roads, Water Supply, Drainage, and Electricity will work together to ensure proper care and healthy growth of these trees,” the NDMC Vice Chairman said.
During the event, RWA representatives and local residents are also expected to present various civic and local issues related to the colony to Chahal.
He plans to hold detailed discussions with the relevant department heads on the spot and directed for prompt and timely resolution of all problems and assured the citizens of necessary action.
Earlier, Chahal shared information about a proposal for decorative illumination at 17 major roundabouts during the BRICS Summit-2026 being held at Bharat Mandapam from September 11 to 13.
He said that decorative electrical illumination is being arranged at 17 major roundabouts. These include: Patel Chowk, Windsor Place, Mandi House, Shantipath-Kautilya, Shantipath-Panchsheel, Shantipath-Satya Marg, RML, Teen Murti, Q-Point, Claridges Hotel, Samrat Hotel, Ashoka Hotel, Methi, Lok Kalyan Metro Station, Man Singh and York Place Roundabout.
He added that 11 major hotel premises will be illuminated decoratively ahead of the event. These include Hotel Taj Palace, ITC Maurya, Ashoka Hotel, Samrat Hotel, The Leela Hotel, Taj Mansingh, Claridges Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Le Meridien Hotel, The Imperial Hotel and one other identified hotel premises. Trees along the roads surrounding these hotels will also be decorated with illumination.
The NDMC Vice Chairperson said that 10 major NDMC buildings and sites will also be illuminated decoratively. These include Palika Kendra, NDCC Phase-II, Convention Centre, Chandralok Building, Ashirwad Old Age Home, Charakha Museum, Central Park and Palika Bazaar area, AAV Mandir Marg, Lok Nayak Bhawan and Chanakya Bhawan.
