BENGALURU: Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Saturday warned civic officials of strict action for negligence in delivering basic services, during surprise inspections across parts of east Bengaluru.
The minister visited Horamavu, Banjara Layout, Agara Lake, Jayanagar, Ramamurthy Nagar and Kasturi Nagar, reviewing garbage collection, sanitation, roads, footpaths, stormwater drains, lake maintenance and ongoing infrastructure works.
At Gandhi Circle in Horamavu, Byre Gowda inspected door-to-door garbage collection and directed officials to ensure waste is collected from every household every day and properly disposed of. Marshals were asked to keep a close watch on public spaces to prevent dumping.
He also directed officials to clear construction debris lying on roads and footpaths to ensure safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
Focus on Agara Lake
During his inspection of Agara Lake, the minister directed officials to remove accumulated waste and maintain cleanliness around the lake on a regular basis. He also sought details on possible encroachments and ordered action wherever violations were found.
Byre Gowda also inspected BESCOM electrical panels located outside the lake premises and asked officials to ensure they were shifted to safe locations to prevent risks to the public.
He directed civic authorities to restore roads immediately after utility works are completed and ensure potholes are repaired without delay.
Railway work reviewed
The minister inspected ongoing railway station-related works along Ramamurthy Nagar Main Road and asked officials to coordinate with railway authorities to clear construction debris, soil and other material from the roadside.
With the monsoon continuing, Byre Gowda also instructed officials to regularly desilt and clean stormwater drains and ensure better coordination among departments to address civic complaints promptly.
‘30% civic workers not attending duty’
During the inspection, some civic workers urged the minister to regularise their services. Byre Gowda expressed displeasure, claiming that around 30% of civic workers were not reporting for duty regularly, affecting door-to-door garbage collection.
He questioned the rationale behind regularising employees who fail to attend work or discharge their duties properly.
“Regularisation cannot be treated as an alternative to accountability and performance,” he said, stressing that civic workers must fulfil their responsibilities to ensure uninterrupted public services.
Better civic services start with better understanding of the ground reality.
