Bengaluru: The Bengaluru South Municipal Corporation is testing laser meters and satellite imagery to verify the built-up area declared by property owners and curb property tax evasion, Municipal Commissioner K N Ramesh said.
Under the pilot project, laser devices will be used to measure building dimensions, internal spaces and the area of individual floors. Google satellite imagery will help identify the external footprint of structures, while a mobile application will be used to map building exteriors.
The initiative aims to identify discrepancies between the building area declared by property owners and the actual measurements, enabling the civic body to verify property tax assessments and improve transparency in tax collection.

Pilot project to assess accuracy
The corporation is testing the technology following an earlier attempt to collect property-related data through drone surveys. The latest initiative seeks to combine satellite imagery with laser-based measurements to assess building areas more accurately.
Ramesh clarified that the project remains at the pilot stage and no final decision has been taken on its formal adoption.
If the trial proves successful, the corporation will consider implementing the technology more widely. The initiative is expected to help officials identify underreported building areas and assess whether property owners are paying tax in accordance with the actual measurements of their properties.
