Kolkata, Aug 22 (IANS) The police in West Bengal’s Murshidabad on Saturday recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the residence of a local Trinamool Congress leader from Baharampur town in the district.
The officials said that Trinamool Congress leader Papai Ghosh, who is the Baharampur town president of the Trinamool Congress Youth Wing, had various charges against him earlier during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led state government, including a marauder charge in 2017.
He was absconding since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government came to power in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly polls where Trinamool Congress faced a landslide defeat.
Earlier this month, Papai Ghosh surrendered at a district court in Murshidabad, following which the police finally arrested him on August 14.
Thereafter, the Trinamool Congress leader was questioned in police custody and during marathon questioning, he confessed about the presence of the huge cache of arms and ammunition at his residence.
On the basis of his questioning by the police, the cops raided his residence and recovered the arms and ammunition from there.
The recovered items include seven firearms, five magazines and 186 rounds of bullets.
The seven firearms recovered from Papai Ghosh’s residence include two 9 mm pistols, three 7.65 mm pistols and two single-shot pipe guns.
In a similar incident, the cops of Saktipur Police Station, also under the Murshidabad Police, on Saturday arrested two persons with firearms and ammunition.
Three firearms, six magazines and 40 rounds of bullets have been recovered from their possessions.
The two persons have been identified as Jabbar Mondal and Alamgir Sheikh.
The police are questioning them to know of the purpose within which they were carrying such huge consignments of arms and ammunition and to whom they were supposed to deliver that consignment.
The BJP government in West Bengal which came to power under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had been active in recovery of illegal arms and ammunition in the different pockets in the state, especially in sensitive areas like Malda, Murshidabad and other India-Bangladesh bordering districts in the state.
