Mangaluru: Mangaluru’s industrial credentials received a major upgrade on Tuesday with the launch of a state-of-the-art Tanker Calibration Unit by SS Metals and Industries, part of the Jonas Group. The new facility, located in Baikampady Industrial Area, aims to provide high-precision calibration services for industries handling oil, chemicals, and other bulk liquids.
The unit was unveiled at a formal ceremony held at the Ocean Pearl Hotel, drawing top industry leaders and dignitaries. Among those present were Rev. Dr. Dexter S. Maben (St. Andrew’s Church, Bengaluru), Sunil A Jonas (Director, Jonas Group), Sandhya Deepa Jonas (Partner, SS Metals), Krishna Hegde Miyar (MRPL), Sanjay Parashar (IOCL), and Stany Leo Noronha (Shiny Shipping). Representatives from IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, RIL, SHELL, and Nayara Energy were also in attendance.
B. Sudarshan, Executive Director (Refinery), MRPL, was felicitated for his contributions during the event.
Sandhya Deepa Jonas highlighted the significance of the unit: “This facility will be instrumental in ensuring precise tanker measurements, aligning with industry and legal standards.” Authorized by the Department of Legal Metrology, the calibration unit is fully equipped to handle a range of tanker types, offering reliable, fast, and regulation-compliant services.
Tanker calibration is crucial for sectors transporting oil and chemicals, where exact volume measurement is key to safety, taxation, and environmental compliance.
The new unit is the latest milestone for SS Metals, founded in 2006 by Sandhya Jonas. In 2020, the company introduced Karnataka’s first KSPCB-authorized automated tanker washing and effluent treatment plant (ETP), which recycles wastewater, reducing freshwater use.
With the launch of this facility, SS Metals continues its push for innovation and sustainability, contributing to Mangaluru’s emergence as a leading industrial destination on the West Coast.
The Jonas Journey:
Sunil A Jonas began his career in 1991 after studying at St. Aloysius, with early stints in shipbreaking and the automobile sector in Dubai. In 2001, he turned entrepreneur with Sannidhi Enterprises, later venturing into mining and logistics. His wife, Sandhya, launched SS Metals in 2006, and together they expanded into petroleum waste management with Jonas Petro Products in 2010—today, the only KSPCB-approved waste oil handler in Coastal Karnataka.
From humble beginnings to high-impact industry players, the Jonas Group continues to blend precision, sustainability, and entrepreneurial vision.
