New Delhi: Prime Minister Modi is set to mark a momentous occasion this Sunday as he lays the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 railway stations across India. This initiative, announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is aimed at enhancing the passenger experience, reflecting a key focus of the government.
Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the personal involvement of the Prime Minister in monitoring the progress of the Railways, providing valuable inputs in the station design process. The ambitious goal is to complete the redevelopment project within a two-year timeframe.
The Prime Minister has consistently stressed the need for modern and state-of-the-art public transportation, recognizing the railways as the preferred mode of travel for people across the nation. In line with this vision, the government had earlier launched the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to redevelop 1309 stations throughout the country.
The foundation stone for the redevelopment of these 508 stations will be laid by the Prime Minister through video conferencing. The cost for this extensive project is estimated to exceed Rs 24,470 crore, with expectations of completion within two years.
The ministry is working on master plans to develop these stations as ‘City Centres,’ ensuring seamless integration with both sides of the city. The holistic approach emphasizes the overall urban development centered around these railway stations.
The 508 stations are spread across 27 states and union territories, with significant numbers in states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharashtra, and West Bengal, among others.
The redevelopment plan seeks to provide modern passenger amenities, efficient traffic circulation, inter-modal integration, and clear signage for passenger guidance. Moreover, the design of the station buildings will be inspired by local culture, heritage, and architecture, adding a touch of uniqueness to each location.
