New Delhi: Leaders from the opposition, including Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, have demanded the immediate restoration of Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership. They criticized the BJP-led Central government for any perceived delay in complying with the Supreme Court’s order to stay Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a defamation case.
Moitra took to Twitter, stating that it has been over 48 hours since the Supreme Court stayed Rahul Gandhi’s unlawful conviction, and she called for prompt action from the Lok Sabha Secretariat in response to the court’s order. She criticized any delay as unjust and against the spirit of India’s highest court, asserting “Satyameva Jayate,” which means “Truth alone triumphs.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal also tweeted, emphasizing that Rahul Gandhi’s conviction was stayed by the Supreme Court on Friday, and as a natural consequence, he should be allowed to resume his parliamentary duties immediately. Venugopal warned against further delays in issuing the necessary notification, as it would be contrary to the spirit of the Supreme Court’s order. He highlighted that the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Parliament was not merely a personal matter but had implications for the democratic rights of the people of Wayanad, his constituency.
The Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday stayed Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a defamation case related to his “Modi surname remark,” effectively paving the way for his reinstatement as a Member of Parliament. Previously, in March, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha following his conviction by a Gujarat court in the same defamation case.
The opposition leaders are now urging the Parliament to take immediate action and restore Rahul Gandhi’s membership following the Supreme Court’s decision.
