Chennai: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPI(M) – is demanding reservation for Tamil medium-educated doctors in government jobs. In a recent statement, a senior leader of the party expressed appreciation for the Madras High Court’s decision to review the request for giving preference to Tamil medium-educated candidates in the appointment of doctors within one month. The CPI(M) insists that the Tamil Nadu government should accept and implement this demand.
The party leader highlighted that there is already a 20 per cent reservation in government jobs for individuals who have learned Tamil medium. The request for extending this provision to the appointment of doctors was presented before the Madras High Court.
The petitioner argued that candidates who have studied Tamil until graduation are compelled to pursue their medical education in English due to the unavailability of medical courses in Tamil. Additionally, it was noted in the petition that certain posts like Food Safety Officer, Pharmacist, and Junior Analyst have reservations, but their courses are conducted exclusively in English.
The CPI(M) leader clarified that the reservation pertains to individuals educated in Tamil medium during their school period. The judges who heard the case have directed the Tamil Nadu government to consider the request for reservation in the appointment of medical doctors in the state government service.
