Mumbai: In a significant move, the Maharashtra government has formally changed the name of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This name alteration has also been applied to Osmanabad, and both divisions are situated in the Marathwada region. The Ministry of Home Affairs has given its approval, stating that there are no objections to these proposed name changes, thus completing the process of renaming these Revenue Divisions in Maharashtra.
After a thorough examination of suggestions and objections submitted several months ago, the decision to implement these changes at various administrative levels, including sub-divisions, villages, talukas, and districts, has been confirmed.
The initial proposal to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad received endorsement during the final cabinet meeting of the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, chaired by the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on June 29, 2022, just before his resignation. Subsequently, the current government led by Eknath Shinde approved the renaming of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv in July 2022.
This decision gained further momentum when the Central government granted approval for the renaming of both districts in February of this year.
