Hyderabad: In what promises to be a closely contested battle, BJP’s Madhavi Latha is set to challenge Asaduddin Owaisi, the long-standing representative of Hyderabad’s Lok Sabha seat. Owaisi, known for his stronghold in the Muslim-majority old city, faces a spirited challenge from Latha, a businesswoman and philanthropist backed by BJP.
Latha, chairperson of Virinchi Hospitals and a Bharatanatyam dancer, brings a fresh dynamic to the political landscape of Hyderabad. Despite her lack of prior political experience, she has garnered attention for her pro-Hindutva stance and activism against issues like triple talaq. Her selection as BJP’s candidate signifies the party’s strategic move to tap into the Muslim vote bank in the old city.
With a background in political science and a strong focus on social welfare through organizations like Lathamma Foundation, Latha aims to address issues of poverty and civic amenities that have long plagued the constituency. Her candidacy represents BJP’s ambitious goal of expanding its presence in Telangana, with hopes of wresting the Hyderabad seat from AIMIM’s grip.
However, Owaisi remains confident in his stronghold, having retained the seat for decades and boasting increased majorities in recent elections. With the backing of AIMIM’s loyal support base and his family’s legacy in Hyderabad politics, Owaisi presents a formidable opponent to Latha’s aspirations.
As the electoral battle heats up, all eyes are on Hyderabad to witness whether the established reign of AIMIM will face a credible challenge from the BJP’s determined candidate, Madhavi Latha.
