Hyderabad: Telangana recently bore the brunt of heavy rains, resulting in a series of unfortunate incidents that claimed six lives. These rain-related fatalities occurred across different parts of the state, highlighting the dire consequences of the inclement weather.
In Jayashankar Bhupalapally district, three individuals, including two women, lost their lives due to lightning strikes. Sarita (30) and Mamata (32), both agricultural laborers, were working in the fields in Kailapur of Chityal mandal when lightning struck them. Similarly, Rajeshwar Rao (46), a farmer from Damarakunta in Kataram mandal, was tragically killed by a thunderbolt while working in his field.
In Sangareddy district, tragedy struck near Mambapur in Gummadidala mandal when Sudhakar (42) was swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a stream. His lifeless body was later recovered by rescue teams.
Wanaparthy district also witnessed two heartbreaking incidents. A six-year-old boy drowned in a pond on the outskirts of Peddagudem, while Shankar Nayak met a tragic end while fishing in a lake.
These unfortunate events unfolded against the backdrop of heavy rainfall that began on Monday night, submerging low-lying areas and significantly disrupting daily life. Lakes, ponds, and streams overflowed due to the relentless downpour, and irrigation projects saw substantial inflows from upstream sources. To manage the surging water levels, authorities were compelled to open the gates of several projects, including the Nizam Sagar reservoir in Kamareddy district, Sriram Sagar Project, and Kadam dam.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts for continued heavy to very heavy rain in specific districts, including Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Khammam, Nalgonda, and Mahabubabad. Moreover, the IMD attributes these weather patterns to a cyclonic circulation over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, which has led to the formation of a low-pressure area in the Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal, off the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts.
