Bengaluru, Oct 26 (IANS) Claiming that a favourable atmosphere was building for the BJP in Karnataka, state party president B.Y. Vijayendra on Monday said a private survey had projected 115 seats for the party.
He accused the state government of lacking the political will to conduct elections to district and taluk panchayats and alleged that it was deliberately creating confusion over reservation categorisation to delay the polls.
Speaking to the media at the state BJP headquarters in Bengaluru, Vijayendra announced that BJP Karnataka in-charge Harish Dwivedi would visit Bengaluru from November 2 to 4.
On November 2, a meeting of state office-bearers would be held, during which Dwivedi would meet core committee members and senior party leaders. He would also visit Kolar and Chitradurga districts to strengthen the party organisation.
Vijayendra expressed suspicion that confusion over reservation categorisation was being deliberately created to pave the way for a court stay on the elections. He asserted that the BJP was fully prepared to contest the local body polls.
Criticising the state government over the Cauvery water issue, he alleged that it had failed to protect the interests of farmers in the Cauvery basin despite the severe drought.
He also accused the government of failing to effectively present Karnataka’s situation before the Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
Vijayendra also condemned Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his father during a speech in Bihar.
Strongly objecting to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s alleged derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his father during a speech in Bihar, Vijayendra said the statement reflected the mindset of Rahul Gandhi and the frustration within the Congress.
He said the Congress was unable to accept Modi’s continued popularity and his becoming Prime Minister for a third consecutive term. Vijayendra demanded that Kharge tender a public apology for his remarks.
Polls are due for around 6,000 Gram Panchayats, 239 Taluks and 31 Zilla Panchayats, besides five corporations of GBA in Bengaluru. Mahanagara Palike polls are due in Mysuru, Davanagere, Mangaluru, Shivamogga and Tumakuru.
The state capital has been without an elected body for the last six years. The government has divided Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike into five corporations, which are now part of the GBA. However, certain issues remain unsolved.
The Next Karnataka legislative assembly election is expected to be held by May 2028 to elect all 224 members of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
