Jaipur, Aug 27 (IANS) The nomination process for the Jaipur Municipal Corporation elections began on Thursday, with 11 candidates filing 13 nomination papers on the opening day.
According to the District Election Branch, nominations were received between 10:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Returning Officer offices set up at 15 locations across Jaipur. Papers were filed for nine of the 150 wards: Ward Nos. 148, 99, 50, 12, 14, 16, 25, 31 and 40. No nominations were filed for the remaining 141 wards.
Of the 13 papers, four were filed by candidates seeking to contest as Congress candidates, while independents filed eight.
Two candidates filed two papers each, one as a party candidate and another as an independent. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are yet to release their official candidate lists.
Despite this, four candidates identified themselves with the Indian National Congress (INC) and filed papers, though the party has not yet formally allotted election symbols.
Officials said filing nomination papers ahead of official ticket announcements highlights the limited time candidates have during the election schedule. Nominations can now be filed only on August 29 and August 31.
No nominations will be accepted on August 28 due to the Raksha Bandhan holiday, while August 30 is a Sunday and Returning Officer offices will remain closed.
With the BJP and Congress expected to announce their candidate lists during the remaining nomination period, the number of nominations is likely to increase significantly over the next two working days.
